An 86-year-old man died Friday morning after his car left the roadway and struck a utility pole and tree in Waterford, officials said.

According to Waterford Police Chief Scott Underwood, a preliminary investigation indicates the man had lost consciousness before the crash, which happened on Pontiac Lake Road near Airport Road shortly before 8 a.m. The man was the sole occupant of the vehicle.

Police did not immediately release his name.

Police officers responding to the scene removed the man from the driver’s seat and began CPR, Underwood stated, but didn’t observe substantial injuries on him.. A crew from the Waterford Regional Fire Department transported him to McLaren Oakland Hospital where he was pronounced dead, Underwood stated.
