MASSSENA, New York (WWNY) - It appeared Friday that negotiations to settle a dispute over land claimed by Akwesasne Mohawks in St. Lawrence and Franklin counties have succeeded.
Elise Stefanik, (R-21) who represents the area in congress, said in a statement “Now that we will have signatures from all parties, I will quickly move to expedite my bill to ratify this historic land agreement by congressional ratification.”
It’s not clear when that would happen.
If ratified by congress, it would be the end of a legal dispute which began 43 years ago.
While the final terms of the deal weren’t immediately available, 7 News reported in January it included free tuition at SUNY Schools, a $70 million payout from the New York Power Authority, and land.
