QUINCY (WGEM) - It’s not technically autumn this week, but it sure feels like it.

Many Tri-State residents are out and about enjoying the cool crisp climate and even a slight rainfall on Wednesday.

However, conditions are still dry, which could pose safety concerns in ways you might not expect.

Quincy firefighter Ryan Hill said that when people irresponsibly litter cigarettes, it could ignite fires.

“A gust of wind can pick up some leaves and land on the top of the roof of your neighbor down the road,” Hill said.

Hill said with autumn around the corner, falling leaves combined with dry conditions are the key ingredients to setting buildings ablaze.

“Sometimes, people like to turn flowerpots where they discard their smoking material,” Hill said. “So, we have seen those catch fire.”
