MACOMB COUNTY, MI – A small plane was forced to make a rough landing at the end of a training flight in Macomb County.

According to Michigan State Police, the fixed-wing, singe engine, 1976 Piper Model PA-28-151 was occupied by a flight instructor and a trainee when it was forced to land at Romeo State Airport at 7:45 p.m. on Thursday.

The occupants had taken off at Pontiac Airport and were logging flight hours for the trainee when the plane sustained a cracked cylinder which caused an oil leak inside the engine compartment, causing the engine to smoke.

Spotting Romeo State Airport nearby, the pilot instructor attempted an emergency landing at the airport, but in doing so the front landing gear broke off and the plane came to a stop by partially skidding down the runaway.
