A new mom and her baby girl are safe after an unexpected delivery in the parking lot of Lime Ridge Mall early Friday.

The expectant mom and dad were on route to the hospital just after 6 a.m. when they realized they were not going to make it and called 911, said Hamilton police Const. Trevor McKenna. As the pair passed Upper Wentworth Street, they decided to pull into the parking lot of the Hamilton Mountain mall.

That was at 6:16 a.m. By 6:22, the baby girl had arrived, and Hamilton police officers pulled into the parking lot moments after her birth.

The officers wrapped the baby to keep her warm and passed her to her mother, McKenna said.

The baby, he added, reached out and grabbed one officer’s hand.
