A powerful explosion in the capital of a northern Peru region plagued by organized crime injured at least 11 people and damaged 30 homes, authorities said Friday.
The late-night blast Thursday in Trujillo, the capital of La Libertad, was the third explosion in the city this year.
The first occurred in January at the Public Ministry’s headquarters.
In August, another blast injured 10 people and damaged 25 homes on a different street in Trujillo.
Local police said they captured two suspects, including one from Venezuela.
On Friday, tractors cleared fallen bricks and partially collapsed walls as authorities warned at least two homes were at risk of crumbling.
Peru has seen a surge in crime with little government response under President Dina Boluarte, particularly murders and extortion.
Local media report almost daily smaller blasts linked to extortionists targeting homes, buses, restaurants, and schools, often in neighborhoods with little police presence.
