Whether to build a new elementary school for Southeast Polk Community School District will be up to voters in November as part of a $51 million proposed bond.
The school board has proposed expanding the district's footprint to accommodate its growing enrollment of 3% over the last four years. Also included in the proposed bond are improvements to elementary playgrounds and money to relocate the office for the junior high school.
The district had to collect at least 1,400 signatures in favor of the referendum before it could go before the school board for approval. Support for the bond surpassed the goal, amounting to nearly 2,000 signatures, said Jean Christenson, the district's community relations coordinator.
