YARMOUTH, Maine — Performing arts bring people together by sharing experiences and emotions. For people with disabilities, it can break down barriers and create spaces for self-expression, empowerment, and community.
Now a nonprofit with a mission is helping drive a new initiative to make theater more accessible throughout Maine.
Accessible Stages Collaborative plans to offer training and resources, enabling people of all abilities to participate in stage productions.
For Bridget Parker, the acting bug bit early.
"I love being on that stage," Parker said. "It helps me with everything in life."
From preschool on, she participated in community and high school theatre productions. After high school, she found fewer opportunities to perform.
"I did audition, but I didn't get any roles.
