CHARLOTTE HARBOR, Fla. ( WWSB ) - A section of U.S. 41 in Charlotte County will be named after a sheriff’s deputy who was killed in the line of duty last year.

The Sgt. Elio Diaz Memorial Highway will be officially designated by the Charlotte County Commission Sept. 9. The measure was approved by the Florida House of Representatives earlier this year.

The section of highway stretches from the Chevron Gas Station at Melbourne Street, to Church Street in Charlotte Harbor.

Diaz was shot and killed during a traffic stop Dec. 15, 2024 at that gas station.

During the stop, the driver pulled out a rifle and fired at Diaz before fleeing. When he was found a few miles away, the suspect reached for his rifle and was shot and killed by deputies.
