PHOENIX (AZFamily) — It’s something good when teachers are supported in their efforts to help their students thrive in the classroom.

And that’s exactly what Valley Leadership (VL) alumni are doing to help strengthen literacy across Arizona. The non-profit recently launched a new initiative called “Leaders for Literacy,” created by the Early Literacy Impact Maker Team , that mobilizes VL alumni and other community leaders to serve as substitutes while full-time teachers attend Science of Reading training.

The pilot program launched this past spring in partnership with Mesa Public Schools, when seven teachers were paired with nine VL alumni volunteers, including lawyers and business professionals, to help support their further professional development.
