The Alberta government has received four additional recommendations to reduce oilsands mine water and help reclaim tailings ponds, as some advocates raise concerns about the lack of standards in place.
The province announced Friday that it has accepted the new recommendations put forward by the Oil Sands Mine Water Steering committee — a task force appointed by the government in May 2024 and tasked with studying potential tailings management options.

Building off of the five initial recommendations, which included injecting oilsands tailings deep underground, the committee added the government should work with industry and researchers to conduct pilots on oilsands mine water treatment technologies, expedite establishing release standards for treated oilsands mine wate
