A dog died Friday after being shot by an Oklahoma Highway Patrol trooper who was taking part in Gov. Kevin Stitt’s Operation SAFE, an effort to clear illegal homeless encampments on state properties in Tulsa.
"It was not what I wanted to wake up to," the dog's owner, 22-year-old Malachi, told the Tulsa World.
Malachi said he was asleep inside his tent behind the Tulsa County jail near Interstate 244 and Maybelle Avenue when the shot woke him.
“We started jumping up to scramble to the doors just to see what the shot was from, and it was my dog,” Malachi said of his 4-year-old pit bull mix named Molly, who sleeps behind his tent.
"They never screamed to let me know that my dog was even getting close to them — it was just a shot."
