MIDDLETON, Wis. (WKOW) -- A new scam is targeting people who live in Dane County.

According to a news release from the city of Middleton, scammers are using AI to mimic voices, sometimes of local officials, to trick people into thinking they have warrants for their arrest. The scammers then try to get people to pay because their victims believe they are in trouble.

Law enforcement in Dane County emphasized that police agencies will never request payment for warrants or citations over the phone, via text, or email.

If you receive a call or message like this, do not pay money. You can verify claims by calling the police agency using the phone number on their website and by checking Wisconsin's public court system (CCAP) to confirm information about a case or warrant.
