FREEPORT, Maine — Almost a dozen Freeport High School students participated in a nationwide walkout Friday afternoon to call for an end to gun violence.
The walkout was organized by "Students Demand Action," a youth activist group that advocates for stricter gun control laws.
The effort was in solidarity with the victims of the shooting at Annunciation Catholic Church in Minneapolis on Aug. 18 that killed two school children and injured 21 others.
"It's really disturbing that guns are the number one killer of young people in America today," a student protester told NEWS CENTER Maine. "When those trainings go on, and we have to learn how to hide from a shooter, it's really scary that this is a real thing that could happen to us."
