A man has died after being attacked by a shark at Dee Why on Sydney’s northern beaches.

NSW Police said the man was bitten by “what is believed to have been a large shark”. He suffered critical injuries and was brought to the shore. He died at the scene.

Police cordoned off the beach, and all beaches from Narrabeen to Manly are now closed.

Footage from the beach shows police and ambulance vehicles at the carpark nearby, while the Westpac emergency helicopter circled overhead.

A tent has been erected on the beach.

Two sections of a surfboard were recovered and taken for expert examination. The Department of Primary Industries is working to determine the species of the shark.
