Fort Wayne and Allen County elected leaders are looking everywhere for possible cuts – including layoffs and cutting the city’s information line – to prepare for receiving fewer property tax dollars.

The full impact of Senate Enrolled Act 1 won’t be felt until 2028, but local leaders said it’s important to adjust now rather than making major changes in 2027. Fort Wayne City Council and Allen County Council must pass budgets for next year by Nov. 1.

Fort Wayne City Council President Russ Jehl, R-2nd, said preparations are still in their early stages, but he’s ready to take on the challenge.

Senate Enrolled Act 1 is a law Gov. Mike Braun promised to get passed during his campaign. It cuts property taxes statewide. Jehl said when it was first introduced, the cuts were unrealistic.
