A thrilling finish and a controversial call. Friday’s season-opening football game for Evergreen and Union was anything but dull.
Evergreen prevailed 24-23 in overtime when its defense stuffed Union’s attempt to win on a 2-point try.
Union felt the game shouldn’t have reached that point.
The Titans believed they had won on the final play of regulation, a 23-yard field goal attempt that was a low line-drive. Union thought it cleared the crossbar. The officials ruled that it didn’t.
“I’m pretty certain it went through,” Union coach Steve Pyne said.
Pyne said he would appeal the game’s result to the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association, saying he would submit video evidence showing the field goal was good.
