Porter Creek Secondary School in Whitehorse launched its first fall culture camp on Sept. 3 at the Ǹtsǟw Chù Kets’edän Kų̀ Traditional Camp, a space designed to embed Indigenous land-based learning into the school community.
The camp, located behind the school, was built with guidance from First Nations elders and will now host seasonal activities that connect students with traditional knowledge, vice-principal Nicole Cross told the News.
"We meet with our First Nations partners once a month to talk about what cultural activities we're devising and then we set the plan in motion," Cross said.
This fall’s culture camp includes students taking part in archery, canning, chainsaw sharpening and lureless fishing, skills that Cross said are tied to the harvest season and rooted in community
