A law could see motorists who are over the limit being hit with penalties or even banned from driving without them even starting the engine on their car.

While many motorists may believe they need to have the engine running and be moving to face drink-driving charges, the laws says differently. Drivers could also face prosecution for being in their car whilst under the influence of alcohol even if they have not switched the ignition on, the Mirror reports .

Under Section 4 (2) of the Road Traffic Act 1988, it is an offence to be "in charge of a mechanically propelled vehicle which is on a road or other public place whilst being "unfit to drive through drink or drugs".
