NEW YORK (PIX11) -- You may know Bestie Boys Square or Jimi Hendrix Way in New York City, but did you know almost 2,500 streets in the five boroughs are named for a famous or unsung hero in history?
New Yorkers and history buffs can explore all of the co-named streets and avenues with an interactive map from the New York City Department of Records.
While many streets were named for a person in the city's history, some are also named for notable locations and neighborhood landmarks like PIX Plaza at the corner of 42nd Street and Second Avenue.
In order for a street to be co-named, residents or organizations must submit their proposals to their local Community Board. If approved, the proposal moves on to the New York City Council and the Mayor for final approval.
