The Honolulu Fire Department executed a nighttime air rescue of three hikers from the Puu Manamana Trail in Kaaawa Saturday.
HFD received a 911 call at 7:34 p.m. reporting the hikers in distress and dispatched five units staffed with 14 personnel, according to a news release. The first unit arrived on scene at 7:55 p.m. and secured a landing zone to prepare for air operations.
The three uninjured hikers in their 20s were in a precarious location at the top of the ridge and were unable to safely find their way back to the trail, the release said. HFD’s Air 1 helicopter dropped rescuers at their location and the hikers were safely hoisted into the helicopter one by one and then airlifted to the landing zone, where they declined medical care.
