A Cambridge councillor has placed his rent control motion on pause after conversations with housing advocates raised concerns about its approach.

Coun. Adam Cooper had introduced a motion asking the province to bring back rent control rules for all rental units, including newer builds. The motion was set to be discussed at Tuesday’s council meeting, but Cooper pulled it from the agenda.

He told The Record he made the decision after learning more from people in the field.

“Following a thorough examination of this issue and conversations with professionals in this area, it became clear that there is a wider context involved that will not be resolved by merely reinstating the … rent control policies,” said Cooper.
