FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Shots were fired at officers responding to a call reporting a shooting at The Cliffs apartment complex on N. Garnet Court in Fayetteville on Sunday, according to police.

A Fayetteville Police Department (FPD) spokesperson said that when officers arrived on the scene, the suspect opened fire, escalating the situation.

"Negotiators with the Fayetteville Police Department attempted to utilize an armored rescue vehicle to get closer to the apartment and make contact with the subject inside, but the subject began shooting at the armored rescue vehicle," FPD said in a Facebook post.

Officers took cover and shots were exchanged, according to FPD. At some point, the suspect was shot by officers.
