ATLANTA — On a hot summer day in Piedmont Park, 11Alive took a free glass of lemonade and turned that offer into an unexpected chance at free money.
11Alive Consumer Investigator Liza Lucas set up a pop-up lemonade stand to raise awareness about billions of dollars in unclaimed property held by the state of Georgia.
Unclaimed property includes things like old savings accounts, utility refunds, uncashed paychecks, or investment dividends. If the rightful owner never receives the money within a set period of time, the property is required to be reported to the state. The Georgia Department of Revenue maintains a database where you can search for and claim your property.
According to the agency, Georgia is currently holding more than $3 billion in unclaimed property on behalf of lost owner
