NORTH CHARLESTON — Earlier this year, the city limited the number of short-term rentals in each council district to control vacation homes in residential areas. While one property owner applied for a permit before the rule took effect, he still got caught under the cap.

The owner filed an appeal to the city's Zoning Board of Appeals, stating the city should grant his request for a short-term rental.

On Jan. 13, the city’s planning commission held a public hearing and discussion about an ordinance amending the city’s short-term rental rules to cap permits at 60 in each district. The commission makes recommendations to City Council but does not have the authority to pass ordinances.
