An academic taking part in industrial action at the University of Edinburgh has said a planned cuts of £140 million are "not necessary" and will undermine the student experience.

Caitlin Jones, a researcher at the university's informatics department, questioned senior management at the institution over their decision to explore staff redundancies as part of cost cutting measures.

She has been joined by colleagues at the historic university in organising a five-day walkout which is set to end on Friday September 12.

"The University of Edinburgh senior management have claimed that a huge amount of money needs to be cut from the university budget, in particular from the staff budget, and they haven't agreed to rule out redundancies," she said.
