A company that operates senior living communities around the country plans to sell off its properties and close its corporate offices in Newton.

AlerisLife, which has corporate headquarters at 255 Washington St. in Newton, will close the offices beginning on Nov. 3 and lay off 179 people, according to a Massachusetts Workers Adjustment Retraining Notice filed with the state on Sept. 3. According to a letter sent to the Massachusetts Department of Career Services, the company plans to sell all of its “community-based assets.”

The company has two divisions, Five Star Senior Living and FOX Rehabilitation. Five Star Senior Living, the division affected by the sale, operates independent and assisted living facilities in 28 states, according to its website . It has one Massachusetts commun
