CARSON – California lawmaker Asm. Mike Gipson has appointed a registered sex offender to a commission seat to represent the 65th Assembly District on environmental matters.

Gipson held a public swearing-in ceremony on Aug. 13, where he appointed the newest commissioners and provided them with commendations to mark the event.

One of the commissioners appointed by Asm. Gipson was Rodney Andrews, who was convicted for sexually abusing a minor in 2021.

Gipson’s office refused multiple requests for comment on whether he was aware Andrews was a registered sex offender at the time of the appointment and declined to state if he was still serving after it was brought to his attention.

Gipson also declined to confirm if he performs background checks on commissioners.
