The Manitoba government has presented the 2025 Council of the Federation Literacy Award to Winnipeg resident Mary Annakak Kuglugiak.

Advanced Education and Training Minister Renée Cable made the announcement Monday, coinciding with International Literacy Day. Kuglugiak, originally from Chesterfield Inlet, Nunavut, was recognized for her achievements in adult learning through the Open Doors Adult Literacy Program in Winnipeg.

Kuglugiak, whose first language is Inuktitut, has gained fluency in written and spoken English through the program. A survivor of the residential day school system and of addiction, she has credited literacy training with helping her find purpose and healing. She now hopes to work as a translator to assist Inuit patients in accessing medical care.
