The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba is reviewing the arrest of a 23-year-old man who was injured during a police encounter early Saturday.

Winnipeg police said they responded to a 911 call around 3:29 a.m. on Sept. 6 reporting an intoxicated man attempting to fight with family members at a home in the 900 block of Winnipeg Avenue.

Officers arriving on the scene found the man being restrained by relatives. Police allege he punched an officer in the chest and spat in his face before being taken into custody following what they described as a use-of-force encounter. A spit sock was applied to prevent further incidents.

The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service cleared the man at the scene, but he was later taken to the hospital for further assessment. Police said h
