CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) - A United States attorney is investigating whether federal charges can be brought forward in last month’s deadly Charlotte light rail stabbing .

Russ Ferguson, U.S. Attorney for North Carolina’s Western District, confirmed Monday, Sept. 8, that his office is “looking into” potential federal involvement.

“The incident was a tragedy, and we are looking at every way the federal government can bring justice to Iryna Zarutska and her loved ones,” Ferguson wrote in part.

On Friday, Aug. 22, a woman identified as 23-year-old Iryna Zarutska was stabbed to death on the light rail, police said. Zarutska’s family said she had recently fled to Charlotte from war-torn Ukraine.
