Calgary restaurant worker Jordan Jacques-Vetten was fatally shot in a premeditated robbery when he refused to relinquish his backpack, a prosecutor told court Monday.

In her opening statement to Justice Lisa Silver, Crown lawyer Carla MacPhail detailed the case she and co-prosecutor Don Couturier intend to call against murder suspect Robert Joseph Matthews.

MacPhail said Matthews and a youth, who can’t be named, were driving around looking for someone to rob when they came upon Jacques-Vetten as he was walking after finishing work as a line cook at a Stephen Avenue restaurant.
