The 42nd annual Klondike Road Relay wrapped up in Whitehorse’s Rotary Park on Sept. 6, drawing about 2,000 participants from Canada, the United States, Asia and Europe.

The race parallels the historic trail once used by Gold Rush stampeders, as it follows the highway from Skagway, Alaska, to the Yukon capital.

The Klondike Road Relay is the largest sporting event supported by Sport Yukon, according to race announcer Steve Fleck. He said this year’s race featured more than 200 teams and over 2,000 runners.

Racer from Alaska were delayed getting to the start line after a ferry from Juneau broke down, according to racer Don Bremner. Despite the setback on the U.S. side, an American team was first to cross the finish line.
