A judge has agreed to delay a contempt of court trial for billionaire Clive Palmer's nephew, Clive Mensink, for another nine months due to "exceptional circumstances" in relation to his former long-term lawyer.

Mr Mensink, the former director of Queensland Nickel, is facing civil charges brought on by the registrar of the Federal Court, after he failed to appear at public liquidation examinations in 2017.

The company collapsed in 2016, leaving hundreds of employees at the Townsville refinery out of work and debts of $300 million.

Mr Mensink left Australia in the months after and has not returned since.

There have been several delays in his civil case, predominantly triggered by Mr Mensink seeking to have the proceedings against him dismissed.
