Oak Bay Police are warning the public to keep an ear out for suspicious phone calls.
On Sept. 5, officers began investigating a report of fraud involving a phone scam, where the complainant received a fraudulent call from someone claiming to be from Telus. The caller, according to Oak Bay Police, offered to reduce their bill and replace their phone.
"After sending in the old phone, the new one was never delivered," the police department said in a news release, which added the scam has been reported by others locally and is consistent with similar incidents across Canada. "Telus confirmed the call was fraudulent."
For locals who receive similar calls, police are advising them to hang up and contact their carrier directly to verify suspicious offers.
