WEST OAHU, Hawaii (Island News) -- Oahu has been seeing an alarming trend with traffic fatalities already more than double compared to last year, many involving e-bikes and e-motorcycles.

HPD is working all angles to prevent the numbers from going up, starting with the west side.

"We see them racing around all the time and are very scared for them, especially when they're not wearing helmets," said Ewa Beach resident Ty Hemphill.

Dozens of bicycles and e-bikes are here at this Ewa Beach school and once the school bell rings, they'll be out on the roads.

"And sometimes there's like a group mentality where there'll be like 50 of them doing wheelies," Hemphill said.

In recent months, there has been an alarming increase in traffic fatalities involving e-bikes and e-motorcycles.
