NEWBURGH – The City of Newburgh has joined with its sister city across the Hudson River in calling on Metro-North Railroad to resume ferry service.

Citing low ridership and other alternatives to crossing the river – the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge and daily bus service – the railroad pulled the plug on the ferry several weeks ago.

Joining the City of Beacon, the Newburgh City County Monday night called for resumption of the service.

Councilman Robert Sklarz said the need for the service will grow in coming years with development on both sides of the Hudson.

“Beacon is planning a major housing and business development. We’re looking to develop the hillside; we’re adding a pier,” he said. “The Hudson River and both sides of the river will be really busy over the next few decades. We need the
