LANSING, MI – A judge dismissed charges against 15 Republicans accused as false electors in the 2020 presidential election.

Lansing District Judge Kristen Simmons said Tuesday, Sept. 9, that the defendants had no intent to defraud.

The families of the defendants and other supporters cheered the ruling and criticized state Attorney General Dana Nessel for bringing what they considered to be a politically motivated prosecution.

Defense attorneys had argued that the defendants believed that they were signing documents that would be used contingent upon then-presidential candidate Donald Trump being determined the winner.

Sixteen Republicans who signed the document faced multiple felony charges. Charges were dropped against another who cooperated with investigators.
