COLUMBIA — State Attorney General Alan Wilson is alleging the active shooter hoax at the University of South Carolina last month was manufactured by an online group with ties to a sprawling, international online culprit that targets children.

Wilson released a warning to parents Sept. 9 about a group known as “Purgatory,” that he said is behind the swatting hoax that sparked chaos on USC’s campus in August.

Authorities have not charged or arrested anyone in connection to the crime. A spokesman for the University of South Carolina said the case is still under investigation.
