MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) - A horse in Grant County has been diagnosed with West Nile Virus, the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection confirmed Tuesday.
A three-year-old Quarter Horse stallion who is unvaccinated tested positive for the virus, marking it Wisconsin’s first confirmed case in a horse this year.
While humans can be infected with West Nile Virus, it does not pass directly between humans and horses. The only way to become infected is to be bitten by an infected mosquito.
However, DATCP said this infection confirms that there are West Nile Virus-transmitting mosquitos in the state. Five human cases have been confirmed in Wisconsin so far.
