“I got my degree in statistics because of Pokémon,” said Isaiah Cheville, a 2020 Waverly-Shell Rock graduate and world championship competitor. “The reason I got interested in it was because of the probabilities that I learned because of Pokémon.”
Not only did Isaiah find his educational ambitions through Pokémon, but he also found success in the trading card game, and he travels nationally and internationally to compete in Pokémon tournaments.
Pokémon is “a role-playing game based around building a small team of monsters to battle other monsters in a quest to become the best,” as Britannica.com states. The different Pokémon monsters are divided into different types with different strengths, and players use these attributes to compete in battles using trading cards.
