For the fourth year in a row, the richest person in the United States is the South African-born businessman and political figurehead Elon Musk , according to Forbes .

Forbes released its annual list of the 400 wealthiest Americans on Sept. 9. It highlights an unequivocal fact: the rich are getting richer.

America's 400 richest people are worth a combined record $6.6 trillion in 2025, which is more than $1 trillion greater than last year's total income.

Musk, the Tesla CEO and former leader of the Department of Government Efficiency , broke the $400 billion mark on the list this year, becoming the first person to do so. He also led the magazine's list of world billionaires earlier this year.
