Devoted KFC fans have a finger-licking good reason to rejoice as today (September 9) marks the 135th birthday of its esteemed founder, Colonel Harland Sanders . The entrepreneur launched his fried chicken empire in 1930 with a roadside diner, but it wasn't until 1952 that the first KFC-branded franchise opened its doors in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Within 10 years, the brand had become a powerhouse, boasting over 600 outlets across the US. The UK got its first taste of the good life in 1965 when the inaugural KFC branch opened in Preston, Lancashire – and it recently celebrated its 60th anniversary with an enticing free food giveaway.
