BATTLE CREEK, MI — A Battle Creek Central High School student has been identified as the shooting victim in a nonfatal incident that occurred Monday near the school.

Battle Creek Police responded to the incident, just prior to 3 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 8, just north of the campus, which is located at 100 W. Van Buren St.

Police and Battle Creek Public Schools administrators issued a joint statement on Tuesday, Sept. 9, calling the incident “unacceptable.”

The incident threatened the safety of students and disturbed the peace of mind of families across the community, the joint statement reads.

“While the incident was not school-related, its proximity to the high school is deeply concerning to both Battle Creek Public Schools and the Battle Creek Police Department," the statement reads.
