TEXAS TOWNSHIP, MI — Inflation and a growing population have been putting a financial strain on Texas Township’s fire department.

To ease that strain, township officials are hoping voters will approve the creation of a special assessment district.

If adopted, residents would pay an additional 0.87 mills of property taxes, meaning the tax would cost property owners $87 more per year for every $100,000 in taxable value to fund the fire department.

The township board could have created the special assessment district without voter approval, but after discussion has decided to add the request to the August 2026 ballot, allowing residents the opportunity to vote on the matter.
