The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC) now has its first chief canine officer.
Gunther, aka Gunny, is a retired German shorthaired pointer who was born in Hungary.
UTC says Gunny's role at the university is mostly honorary, but he can often be found alongside UTC Police Chief Sean O'Brien.
O'Brien's partnership with Gunny began when he was a lieutenant at the Chattanooga Police Department.
Gunny has a powerful nose after being trained in Vapor Wake, which is a scientifically based canine detection method. It trains dogs to track the scent trail left behind by someone carrying explosives and other contraband.
The canine retired in late 2023 after it was discovered he had a cancerous tumor. It has since been removed and he is now in good health.
