With excitement, Bob Scanlon remembers the day last winter when wild coho salmon were seen spawning in Cougar Creek's Surrey headwaters for the first time in a very long time.
December 2024 saw the first coho spawners return to the upper creek reaches in decades, in the park on the Surrey side of 120 Street, north of 68 Avenue.
"People wondered why all the fish were there," said Scanlon, longtime volunteer with Cougar Creek Streamkeepers . "We got a call from a guy at the (Sikh) temple asking about all the big fish in the creek. I went down and there must have been 100 people watching (the fish). It was the first time we've ever seen fish above Scott Road."
