The mayor’s race in Alabama’s second largest city is heating up ahead of a runoff , after the candidate that claimed more votes has fundraised $1 million less than her opponent.

Now, more cash is pouring into the race to be Mobile’s next mayor, as Alabama State Rep. Barbara Drummond faces former Mobile County District Judge Spiro Cheriogotis in the runoff on Sept. 23.

Rep. Drummond earned a third of the vote, more than any other candidate but short of the 50% plus one vote needed to win without a runoff. In the first days of the runoff cycle, she raised nearly $420,000, as of Sept. 3. She’s also brought in more total donations than her opponent.
