NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly announced that a decision regarding the status of five former Hockey Canada players is expected soon. The players—Michael McLeod, Carter Hart, Alex Formenton, Dillon Dube, and Callan Foote—were acquitted on July 24 in a high-profile sexual assault case in London, Ontario. McLeod was also acquitted of a separate charge related to the incident.
The ruling concluded a complex trial that drew significant attention across Canada and sparked discussions about consent and the culture within hockey. Following the verdict, the NHL stated that the players would remain ineligible to play in the league while it reviews the case findings. This decision was met with criticism from the NHL Players’ Association. Additionally, Hockey Canada confirmed that the five players are suspended from all its sanctioned activities.
During a media tour in Las Vegas, Daly did not provide further updates but expressed that he expects a decision to be made "at some point in the relatively near future." He emphasized that the NHL is taking the matter seriously, which is why it remains under review.
