More than 200 people rallied on Poydras Street Tuesday evening to protest President Donald Trump’s suggestion that he could deploy National Guard troops in New Orleans.
Some passing drivers laid on their horns in support as demonstrators waved Palestinian flags and held signs that read “Reject Trump’s racist takeover,” “We say NO to deportation” and “No Trump, No Troops.”
Mike Roberts, a nurse at University Medical Center and union member, called on motorists to step out of their cars and join the movement. He said solidarity across labor groups, immigration rights advocates and trans rights activists was critical.
"I cannot think of anything more important right now than being on these streets," Roberts told the crowd outside the Hale Boggs Federal Building.
